Although in the viewpoints of many sports fans and authors either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather goes at the top of the pound for pound stakes, of late there has been another public figure put forward by some as the new top fighter in the sport.
Enter Sergio Martinez, a fighter nigh unidentified only a few little years ago who has heightened to prominence with wins over the likes of Paul Williams, Kelly Pavlik and most recently Serhiy Dzinziruk.
Sure enough over the last year and a half, he has had the most hard opponents, won in a consistently impeccable manner and is always ready to take on just about anyone in spite of their profile or promotional status.
Whether this is enough to force him above Pacquiao and Mayweather however, who have been the two biggest stars in the sport for some years now, is a matter now being hotly contended.
Adding intrigue to the debate is the fact that Pacquiao has an coming fight with Shane Mosley in which he will be supposed to perform as well as Martinez did against Dzinziruk, and that Mayweather will likely soon be leaving the rankings altogether for inactivity since his last fight in May of last year.
Martinez calls out Cotto, Mayweather, Pacquiao, unlikely to fight any of them.
Also the Ring magazine rankings, which are held as generally the most respected in the sport, are published tomorrow, and some are speculating that Pacquiao might no longer be in the number one spot.
